When you donate to Hooves of Hope, you might wonder: where exactly does my money go? We believe in complete transparency about our costs. Here’s the honest breakdown of what it takes to care for a horse or hoofed animal at our rescue.
Monthly Care Costs for One Horse (Standard)
- Quality Feed & Hay: $120–180/month
- Not budget grain and hay. Rescue animals need high-quality nutrition to recover from malnutrition and neglect. Senior horses need specialized feed. Good forage costs money.
- Farrier Services: $150 per visit (typically 6–8 weeks)
- Professional hoof care is non-negotiable. Overgrown, infected, or damaged hooves cause pain and complications. A good farrier visit runs $150–250 depending on the horse’s condition.
- Veterinary Care: $50–75/month for routine checkups, vaccines, deworming
- Regular wellness visits, bloodwork, and preventive care add up quickly. Emergency vet visits can easily exceed $500–1000.
- Supplements & Medications: $25–50/month (for horses with special needs)
- Joint supplements, hoof supplements, wound treatments, digestive aids. Rescue animals often need these.
- Pasture Maintenance: $20–40/month
- Fencing repairs, pasture seeding, water system maintenance.
Total Monthly Care Cost: $365–495 per horse
That’s $4,380–5,940 per year for basic humane care for one animal.
And that’s without:
- Dental care ($300–500 per year)
- Lameness evaluation or treatment
- Emergency vet visits
- Facility improvements and repairs
- Insurance
- Staff or volunteer support
